Shop Local Day Wrap-Up

For the third time, merchants, shoppers, community members and Chesapeake Bank employees ventured throughout the Middle Peninsula, Northern Neck and Williamsburg areas to show support for their community’s businesses.

November’s Shop Local Day brought together over 300 merchants from across our communities, an increase of 25 percent from our spring Shop Local Day. To help drive traffic to stores, participating businesses had shopper incentives which ranged from 10 percent off discounts, entries into fun giveaways and free gifts with purchase. Also, Chesapeake Bank staffers came out to seven local restaurants passing out Shop Local shopping bags and $5 cash to each diner who came in to take part in the Cash Mob initiative. Throughout our promotional efforts, about 15,000 Shop Local Day bags were distributed to businesses and to shoppers.

“We’ve seen Shop Local Day really increase awareness about the importance of shopping locally and debunking the belief that local stores are more expensive. This is the number one topic that comes up when talking with merchants, employees and customers about shopping local,” says Paula Milsted, Director of Marketing with Chesapeake Bank. “Merchants are also showing that they, too, support each other by using local vendors for their business needs, shopping locally themselves and referring their customers to other local businesses.”

Our next Shop Local Day will take place in spring and we hope to get even more merchants involved. If you participated, please take a few moments to fill out our Shop Local Day survey. It will only take a couple of minutes and your feedback will be helpful in making our next event the best it can be.

While we celebrate shopping local with our spring and fall events, strive to make every day Shop Local Day. If all the community members made just one or two more local purchases a month, the difference would be tremendous.
