The Daffodil Festival, a spring tradition in Gloucester, is coming up this weekend. The weekend-long festival celebrates the community and the history of the daffodil, and this year’s festival is on Saturday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 12 from noon to 5 p.m. Chesapeake Bank has sponsored the festival since 2003 and is excited to be a part of this great community event again this year!
The daffodil is a significant flower to the Gloucester community, almost as old as the community itself. When Gloucester was formed in 1651, early settlers brought daffodils as reminders of English springs as they established themselves in the area. Those interested in learning more about the daffodil and its “roots” in Gloucester might enjoy reading Wild About Daffodils, available for reading or printing here.
In its 29th year, the award-winning Daffodil Festival is sponsored by the Daffodil Festival Council in co-operation with the Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. You’ll see from just a quick glance at the festival event schedule that the festival truly offers something for everyone, with options for music, children’s activities, a fine art show, the crowning of the 2015 Daffodil Queen and more.
