Everyone cares about something. And for Chesapeake Bank’s Business Development Officer Kristie Smith, it’s RVA’s Westwood Park and Playground.
Kristie discovered the once-abandoned neighborhood park late last year and set out on a mission to bring it back to life.
In the following months, Kristie worked with the City of Richmond, Parks & Recreation and Enrichmond. She teamed up with Reverend Jeanette Brown of the nearby Westwood Baptist Church to rally community members and Chesapeake employees. Together, they established the Friends of Westwood Playground: a nonprofit dedicated to raise funds to restore and maintain the Westwood Park.
In April 2016, more than 40 volunteers pitched in to clean up the park. They picked up litter, pulled weeds and planted flowers. And for the first time in 10 years, the park pavilion has working restrooms and running water.
But the job’s not done. To ensure the park continues to be a fun, safe place for kids and families, it has to be maintained.
So as part of our #ICareAbout campaign, we’re dedicating the month of July to raising awareness – and funds – for Kristie’s cause: The Friends of Westwood Playground. Learn more and donate to The Friends of Westwood Playground throughout July and we’ll match it!
And if you’re in the area, join us on July 21st for our #ICareAbout Happy Hour – an evening of craft beer, local food trucks and live music by The Tide Rose – to benefit The Friends of Westwood Playground.
