A Funny Story About A Real Debit Card Mix Up and Some Tips

We thought you might get a kick out of a fun exchange and mix-up between two coworkers at our Gloucester branch. It just so happens to be an opportunity to share some banking tips that will make your life easier.

Friday morning, Dianne Pillsbury [left] stopped at Food Lion to make a purchase on her way in to work, but her purchase was declined. She thought she may have entered her pin number wrong, so she tried it again.

Again–declined.

She removed the card to double-check it and was surprised to find that it belonged to a coworker [right], Becca Murrell.

The day before, Becca had gone out to grab lunch orders for her and Dianne. She slipped her debit card (instead of Dianne’s) into the bag before giving Dianne her lunch.

Dianne couldn’t wait to tease her friend when they got into the office.

Dianne immediately told Becca the story about her declined card. Before she could explain whose card she had, Becca exclaimed, “You know, someone was using my card last night in Richmond! They bought dinner and donuts! Can you believe it? As soon as I got the text, I disabled it in the online banking app. Fraudsters aren’t getting my money.” (Becca making that change, is why Dianne was no longer able to use the card Friday morning.)

Then Dianne pulled out the debit card and replied, “I have your card!!”

Becca – “You had dinner at Carini’s–that was you?!”

Then they both burst out laughing.

While this is a fun story that helps you know our team. There are some fun banking tips worth sharing:

  1. Text Alerts can notify you instantly about transactions. To set this up, Log in to Online Banking or our Mobile App, go to Profile & Settings>> Text Alerts>> Click Add Alert, then Transaction Alerts. Enter the transaction details that you’d like to be notified about. Then click Save.

  2. If you suspect fraudulent activity, you can disable your debit card in Online Banking or our Mobile App: Once logged in, browse to Manage Debit Cards>> Card Services>> Slide the toggle bar to the disable status for the card in question. If you realize it was a mix up, you can always slide the toggle back to an enabled status. (Should it be a real situation where fraud is suspected please report it to your branch immediately.)

  3. Order a Custom Photo Card where you can upload your own image so it doesn’t get mixed up with your coworker’s card.

We hope you enjoyed this real-life example, the tips, and a few laughs from our team.

Happy Banking.
